Dear Friends,

Welcome to our first edition of Sourcing Bali News for 2010.

We are very proud to bring you the latest news from Sourcing Bali and our supplier partners.  

I can hardly beleive that we are already midway thru January, 2009 seemed to pass so quickly, we barely caught our breath.  I am pleased to report that, despite some slow down in business, thanks to your support, we survived one of the worst economic years in recent history. 

Sadly, some of our retail customers around the world have not survived, whilst some segments of the market have seen strong growth.  Garden centres selling pots, pebbles etc seem to have done well, whilst furniture and home wares have declined.  It will be an interesting year ahead.

Surprisingly, our personal shopping visits in Bali were very busy in December and are looking good for January - a good sign that the economy is moving :-).  We have got some nice private residential projects in Bali and Overseas - as well as some hotel refurbishments in Fiji, Mauritius, and Anguilla. 

Our Hosptiality Essentials brand was very strong for 2009 - despite the slowdown, hotels and resorts kept their orders.  Some of the larger projects postponed, but we have started 2010 with a bang, and orders from Saudi Arabia, Maldives, Oman, Australia, Malaysia and others.

I could ramble for days.. but i had best get on with the news.. I do want to take this opportunity - on behalf of the entire team - now 80+ - thank you. !! thank you !!  thank you !!

Personal Shopping Services

We receive an average of 10 new registrations to our website everyday.  In most cases, we take the time to send a personal email to ask about their needs, particularly if the new registrant adds specific details of their search on our site.

Many new customers search our site to get an insight into the type of products that BALI has to offer - our site has a good range, although it is only a very small % of the variety of products that we source for our customers.

Often, customers visit the site in order to plan for their visit and usually end up confirming a personal shopping service with us.  We have successfully assisted THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of happy customers over the years, and we continue to operate these for visitors to Bali, assisting with introductions to suppliers, helping with translations and design interpretations, establishign quality control standards, taking notes and pictures and helping with selections..we also arrange collection, packing and shipping through our sister company www.rimcargo.com  it's a very personal, intimate service and we have many happy customers all over the world.

One of our most recent clients was Academy Award winning actress Ms Penelope CruZ and fiance Javier Bertran... Wayan spent over a week with the couple, selecting items for their new home in Madrid.

These handcrafted peices are kiln dried and fine sanded - and sold untreated.

Teak is one of the most durable timbers suitable for outdoor use, if left outside untreated  these solid timbers will age beautifully and turn to a sunbleached grey.  Alternately, you can oil these (or we can oil them for you) for a rich honey colour.

Chippendale Mahogany Furniture

On our recent visit to Java, Robert and I came across a factory which at first glance was deserted, and derelict.  After further inspection, we found something quite the contrary, and very surprising..  much to our delight (and a bit sad) we were introduced to a mountain, whole warehouse loads of finely carved, european export quality, exquisite mahogany Chippendale furniture. 

The 2000 sqm warehouse  (20,000 sq feet)  was loaded two stories, stacked to the rafters with beautiful quality carved pieces, some as old as 10 years or more.

The sad story is - the maker has a client who used to order 20 containers per month, they closed and the maker was left with the stock - and has been storing it ever since.  The peices are currently raw but can be finsihed from a wide range of fine finsihes.  Prices for chairs start from US$60, consoles US$130 - the list is endless..

These peices would normally sell in European Auction houses for 10 times this amount.  If you have any genuine interest in fine quality Chippendale furniture - please let me know and I will be happy to assist.   desmond@sourcing-bali.com

New Crew - New Division - To be advised

In the last newsletter, I mentioned that we have Chung Le joining us as Head Designer for our new Interior design division.  I am now pleased to report that we have compelted the team and added two new members to the Sourcing Bali family.


Rina joined us in December as Interior designer - she works closely with Chung to create concepts, colours and mood boards, Rina was most recently working on the Shangri La in Maldives.



Also joining is Kadek Wira as Senior Drafstman.  Kadek was formally with a well known architect firm in Bali.  Kadek has a greatr deal of experience with technical drawings and renderings.


 

The New Interior design team is busy putting together new designs for our launch at the FHA trade exhibtion in Singapore in April - it's an exciting time for Sourcing Bali and I look forward to sharing more news soon.

Copy Cats

I think there is a saying about 'imitiation being the greatest form of flattery' - well, it's not so flattering to find yet another website using data directly copied from ours, or companies using our name in reverse as a trading name.  !

We have closed down four companies in recent months and we continue to surf the web for other new offenders.  Our website is protected, and we have patented all brands, and trading names and derivatives - and have used legal action to prevent their use.

Often, our competitors get emails that are thought to be addressed to us, only to find that the level of service, attention to detail and professionalism from the competitors is not what they expected - from Sourcing Bali.  Sometimes we hear about it, sadly, mostly we dont. 

We can only hope with our constant monitoring of the net, we can capture the 'rogues' and make sure that all communication channels to SOURCING BALI are open, and not confused...and our customers receive the personal service that Sourcing Bali is famous for. !!

babies, babies everywhere !

In the last 12 months, we've had 7 baby boys born into the Sourcing Bali family - we say special congratulations to >>

Ketut, Ray, Bobby, Putu, Ketut, and Pipin and Sri all of whom have had boys  (sri's was last week) ... just last month we had our first girl .. Congratulations to Putu on the arrival of his new baby girl, and next month, we're expecting news Wayan Sukarsih's 4th. 

There must be something in the canteen food !!

We estimate that there has been over 50 babies born within Sourcing Bali family since we opened our doors in 2000 .. Hows THAT for progress?
